Merida
This vibrant cultural city is the capital of the Yucatan. It is known as the “White City” because of the use of white limestone in the architecture of many of its buildings. Merida perfectly embodies old world culture with modern day conveniences. Much of Merida’s architecture from the colonial period still stands and it is the center of Mayan culture. This booming metropolis also boasts an extensive range of modern day amenities including shopping malls, movie theatres, museums, art galleries, and restaurants.
Merida is located approximately 35 kms (22 miles) from the coast in the northwest part of the state of Yucatan. This ideal central location allows for exploration of numerous surrounding ruin sites and ecological wonders. Merida allows you to truly experience Mexican culture in a uniquely modern way.
Merida is set in a tropical wet and dry climate and is hot with moderate to high humidity. The average annual high is 33°C (91°F). Rainy season occurs between June and October.
Progreso
This port city is the hub of Yucatan’s coastal communities. Once a sleepy fishing village it is now the center for the fishing industry and a port for cruise ships. It offers beautiful clean beaches and spectacular emerald green water to satisfy the sightseer or swimmer in anyone. The water has no undertow allowing for great swimming conditions.
Progreso offers many essential services including restaurants, hardware stores, supermarkets, and a hospital. If you desire any more shopping or activities - Merida (the capital of Yucatan) - is only 30 minutes south and also offers many amenities and attractions.
Chelem
This small fishing village is located just west of Progreso. It is within this diamond in the rough where you can fully immerse yourself in Mexican culture. Scenic views of coconut palms resting peacefully in front of the beautiful turquoise water of the Gulf truly emulates paradise. While enjoying the scenery, be sure to keep a look out for wildlife. Large amounts of flamingoes can be found, as well as turtles, various birds, and pelicans.
Feel at home among the locals at one of the many small family restaurants. Be sure to sample fresh seafood, cold beverages, and delicious local fare while relaxing and enjoying this beautiful area.
Chuburna
Located just west of Chelem, Chuburna is also a small fishing village. It offers a quiet setting, very conducive to a relaxing stay. Take in the salty ocean breeze while walking the beach or lounging around. Enjoy the beautiful turquoise hues of the Gulf of Mexico and the peacefully swaying palm trees. Have your camera ready for the local wildlife; watching for dolphins, flamingos, and pelicans.
